Hemp For Dogs - 3 Surprising Uses
So you’ve heard the rumours about Hemp for dogs.
It can support immunity, aid digestion, boost heart health and promote a radiant coat.
But when we’re considering giving our dogs the notorious green plant, it’s perfectly normal to have a question or two. Like what is Hemp? Why is it so good? And how on puppy-pooping earth do I use it on my dog?
What is Hemp for Dogs?
First things first, this article will focus solely on the use of Hemp Seed Oil for dogs.
This is important, because there’s a big difference between Hemp (CBD) Oil and Hemp Seed Oil. Hemp Seed Oil is made from the cold-pressed seeds of the hemp plant. It doesn’t contain cannabinoids (like CBD and THC), which interact with your body in different ways via the endocannabinoid system.
Therefore, Hemp Seed Oil is not psychoactive. Your pupper can slurp it up until the cows come home and they won’t get high (although, need we say we don’t recommend that? They might get a little full).
So, rather than having an active effect on our endocannabinoid system, Hemp Seed Oil is more like a delicious super-food. Super-dooper, even.
It’s full of vitamins, minerals, good cholesterol, protein, fibre, antioxidants and the optimum ratio of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Bring this all together, and you’re left with one healthy looking pupper. These nutrients work to support immunity, aid digestion, soothe irritation, strengthen their coat and promote healthy skin.
So how do we get this goodness from the seed to our dogs?
The Top 3 Uses of Hemp Seed Oil for Dogs
1. Add it to their food
Have you ever looked at the ingredients in some of the supermarket dog food? We’ll give you a hint, it ain’t pretty. But by simply adding a few drops of Hemp Seed Oil to their food, you’re helping to meet their daily dietary needs. The Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are present in Hemp at a ratio of 3:1. This is the perfect balance (as there are many unbalanced sources of Omega 3 and 6, which can cause problems).
2. Put it on their sore spots
Hemp can also come in the form of a balm. This is perfect for rough, cracked paws or areas of concern. Hemp is a natural anti-inflammatory, making it great for sore joints and skin conditions. Plus, when it comes to putting topical products on our dogs, we need to make sure it’s safe for them to lick. Our Hemp Pet Balm certainly is.
3. Apply to their skin and coat
Hemp Seed Oil can also moisturise, replenish and strengthen your dog’s skin and coat. You can apply it in the form of a Pet Shampoo, which is also great for sensitive and irritated skin (in humans that are applying it as well).
So remember, you can’t overdose on Hemp Seed Oil for dogs. Think of it as a slurpin’ good superfood.
